Abstract
A school which wants to survive, prosper and develop must take risks. The main duty of those responsibly managing the school (the rector, the chancellor and the bursar) is to know the threat portfolio – the hazards facing the school now and those, which may occur in the future. These officials decide, if a given risk is acceptable and, if not, what kind of action should be undertaken to optimise and mitigate it.
Operating under risk has a special place in the performance of every higher education institution (HEI). It is difficult to imagine an HEI on the educational services market without its stable development. Moreover, proper risk management must be founded on trust and frequently be an element of integrated management within the organisation. If this rule is not observed, the resulting accumulated risk may easily undermine the stability of academic institutions and the whole higher education system. Therefore, there is no doubt about the need to monitor and mitigate risk in academic institutions.
