Abstract

Indian agricultural system has faced serious problems of environmental and ecosystem degradation since colonial periods. Attempts of technology transfer in green revolution for food security resulted in increased production of rice, wheat etc. in selected regions, nevertheless it has resulted serious environmental and economic conflicts. Large majority of areas have become drought and flood prone in centralized globalization. The privatization and globalization policy requires policies for sustainable growth of agricultural systems and innovation rather than simply transfer of exogenously developed technologies leading to environmental degradation, increased costs of production and suicides.

This paper provides principles and approaches of innovations in agricultural systems in India under the conditions of serious environmental crises in agro-ecosystems and failure of transfer of technology for agro-ecosystem restoration in agro-climatic regions, issues of sustainable growth of agriculture on the ecological and economic principles, policy evaluation of technology transfer and strategic planning for innovation in agriculture.
