Abstract

This book provides an analysis of how transnational gas markets have evolved and impacted the European Union (EU)-Russia energy relations. It offers a detailed examination of how the shale gas revolution has exposed gas markets to new practices and norms; as a result, this revolution has made gas markets more market-oriented. Moreover, the author explores the energy links between the EU and Russia and argues that they have become locked in path-dependence patterns. He then demonstrates how the current political conflict in Ukraine has turned energy interdependence into a political instrument. This politicization has created a desire to invest in alternative energy projects which, as the author argues, are outside of recent trends in transnational gas markets.
