Abstract
In this paper we propose to consider briefly, and in quite general terms, the significance of modern private security and its implications for the nature and scope of policing in our society. In doing so, we shall necessarily raise some very far reaching questions in which, although we will not be able to deal with them in detail in the paper, we hope may spark response and elaboration in the discussion which follows our presentation.
