Abstract

Professor Gerald ('Jerry') Paul McAlinn passed away in Tokyo on 2 May 2016. After a distinguished career in private practice, including at leading Japanese law firm Anderson Mori, and as in-house counsel for ARCO Chemical Asia Pacific and Nippon Motorola, Ltd, Jerry became a full-time academic in 1993. His most recent tenured appointment from 2004 at Keio Law School saw him at the forefront of Japan’s contemporary legal education reforms. He worked tirelessly to promote Keio’s international programs and taught subjects as diverse as international business transactions and US constitutional law. Over three decades in Japan, Jerry built a world-wide network and reputation for teaching and research on Japan. His edited book, Japanese Business Law, brought together many of his friends and colleagues in a significant contribution to legal knowledge about Japan after the collapse of its economy in the 1990s.
