Abstract

Environmental issues continue to plague the business community particularly for organizations whose processes and operations directly impact on the environment. This calls for the integration of sustainable technologies, practices, and products across the supply chains of every economic sector, and highlight the importance of redirecting corporate resources toward sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to provide enhanced insight into the impact of Green model implementation on company’s functional strength as finance, marketing, production and operations, information technology, general management, human resources among others through theoretical and empirical extension of the work of other researchers on company’ sustainability model in India. Though there is a general agreement by prior research that going green can make economic sense, however, there remain many unanswered questions regarding exactly how, the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices can benefit the business organizations. Also, the environmental strategy of firms indicates that there is no consensus on approach to “greenness” on the basis of firm's characteristics such as size, technology, position in the value chain among others as these factors varies according to the sector being considered. The article reviews sustainability strategy that focuses on the Triple Bottom Line – that integrates business sustainability goals with social and environmental sustainability goals that have valid and reliable measurement instruments; and provides a conceptual foundation for future research. By implication, this paper provides a theoretical basis that can help managers navigate their way when incorporating sustainability framework in their business strategy. The paper adopts a theory based approach in the analysis with data derived from secondary sources such as journals, company documentation and sustainability reports, working papers, government policy documents and web materials.
