Abstract

This paper provides a window into the world of patent licensing. It begins with an overview of what patent licensing is and why it is such an important technique for companies seeking to monetize patents as well as those seeking to gain access to patented technologies. We next review some of the essential terms most commonly found in patent license agreements. We close by taking a look both backwards and forwards, addressing how patent licensing has evolved, and also reviewing newer cutting edge monetization techniques that have their foundation in traditional bilateral patent licensing.

Keywords: patent, patent license, monetization, license agreement
