Abstract

Yash Pal Ghai (hereinafter Ghai) has had a long, still continuing, career in law. During that time he has served many legal roles, as an educator, researcher, counsel to private parties, conciliator/mediator for disputing groups or interests, and, most famously of all, as a drafter and interpreter of constitutions throughout the world. In this paper I will focus on legal education. I will attempt to state Ghai’s views, espoused early in his career and maintained throughout, about what legal education should be or aspire for. I will conclude by raising a few questions about the practice of legal education in East Africa in the many years since Ghai concluded his period as a legal educator here.
