Abstract
There is a widespread belief that many “assault weapons” (semiautomatic guns that are cosmetically similar to automatic rifles) can be easily converted to full automatic. This is sometimes used as an argument for banning them. But current law already treats such readily convertible weapons or parts to do such conversions as machine guns, subject to the very strict licensing and transfer rules.
