Abstract

Due to the development of private sector universities in Bangladesh, a large number of students are studying at the undergraduate and graduate programs of private universities of Bangladesh. These students are being educated in different disciplines including business studies, science and technology, arts and social sciences. But the effectiveness of the education depends on the use of information technology in classroom teaching and evaluation of the performance of the students. This study only focuses on the impact of IT use on the teachers' behaviors. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in this study. Descriptive statistics were used to explain the private university educational environment and inferential statistics such as, Factor Analysis was used to identify the factors related to the behavior of the university teachers concerning the use of information technology. Multiple Regressions analysis was used to identify the relationships between the factors and the overall impact of IT-use on the behavior of the university teachers. Results show that there are eleven factors concerning teacher's behavior such as,willingness of the IT staff and up-to-date IT facilities, use of computer and internet facilities, summing up lecture, use of OHP and online portal, use of grade calculator and face book, availability of IT staff, computer literacy of the students, script checking and feedback, use of multimedia in lecture, updating lecture notes, and evaluation of IQ level of the students. The factors including willingness of the IT staff and the updated IT facilities, summing up lecture, use of OHP and online portal, availability of IT staff, computer literacy of the students, script checking and feedback, use of multimedia in lecture, and evaluation of IQ level of the students are significantly related to the overall impact of the IT-use on the university teacher's behaviors in Bangladesh. The factors such as, use of computers and internet facilities, use of grade calculator and face book, and updating lecture notes are not significantly related to the overall impact of IT-use on the university teacher's behaviors in Bangladesh. This study suggests that the use of IT will significantly enhance the effectiveness of learning of the private university students in Bangladesh if the factors including willingness of the IT staff and up-to-date IT facilities, IT competency of the students, and use of IT at all levels of teaching and evaluation of the students are emphasized by the policy makers of the private universities in Bangladesh.
