Desventajas De Género Salariales Y Los Retornos a Las Habilidades Digitales: La División Digital Más Allá Del Acceso, Buenos Aires, Ciudad De Guatemala Y Lima (Wages Disadvantages of Gender and Returns to Digital Skills: The Digital Divide Beyond Access, Buenos Aires, Guatemala City and Lima)

Abstract

Spanish Abstract: La literatura reciente muestra que persisten fuertes brechas de género salariales a favor de hombres y que parte importante de esta aún sigue sin explicar. Es así que diversos trabajos han mostrado la posibilidad de que la brecha digital de género existente explique, en parte, la brecha salarial. Sin embargo, no se ha logrado reflejar exitosamente la brecha digital, más allá de la mera posesión de un dispositivo, lo que es insuficiente. Abordamos este vacío a través de la construcción de indicadores de habilidades digitales utilizando la encuesta “Uso de Internet: Plataformas y Datos de Acceso Libre”, realizada por DIRSI, en las capitales de Argentina, Perú y Guatemala para el 2014. Se obtienen dos grupos de resultados: (1) género, edad, educación, ocupación y características del hogar son determinantes informacionales importantes en la muestra observada, y (2) que las habilidades TIC afectan positiva y significativamente el salario obtenido por persona.

English Abstract: Recent literature shows that strong gender wage gaps persist in favor of men and that a significant part of it still remains unexplained. Thus, various studies have shown the possibility that the existing gender digital divide may explain, in part, the wage gap. However, it has failed to reflect successfully the digital divide, beyond the mere possession of a device, which is insufficient. We address this gap through the construction of digital skills indicators using the "Internet Use: Platforms and Free Access Data" survey conducted by DIRSI in the capitals of Argentina, Peru and Guatemala by 2014. Two groups of results are obtained: (1) gender, age, education, occupation and household characteristics are important informational determinants in the observed sample, and (2) ICT skills positively and significantly affect the salary obtained per person.
