Abstract

The Polar Code for Shipping applicable is designated Polar Waters in the Arctic and Antarctic comes into effect on January 1, 2017. This article examines the waters and vessels that will be covered by the Code's safety and environmental protection provisions, with particular attention to Alaska. The article highlights the perceived inadequacy of the Code's standards for polar water operations training for masters and deck officers and suggests topic that may be revisited in a Polar Code Phase II process.
