Abstract
Although many think the atom bombs dropped on Japan ended the war, scholarship shows a more nuanced picture. many factors influenced the Emperor's decision to accept the Potsdam Proclamation. The alternative to the bomb may have been carpet bombing of Japan; which was the more desirable way to end it?
