Systematic Analysis of Congestion Control in WDM Mesh Networks

Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and fiber optics are promising technologies that are expected to satisfy the drastically increasing bandwidth requirements of the Internet. WDM is an approach that can exploit the huge optoelectronic bandwidth mismatch by requiring that each end-user’s equipment operate only at electronic rate, but multiple WDM channels from different end-users may be multiplexed on the same fiber. Traffic grooming has recently emerged as an important area in WDM optical network research. This research area addresses the problem of multiplexing lower rate traffic demands into wavelength channel of high bandwidth, so as to reduce network equipment cost by maximizing the optical routing and minimizing electronic routing. In this paper, we describe a range of problems that has to be considered in traffic grooming. The clustering algorithm for hierarchical traffic grooming in large WDM networks has to be developed. In hierarchical grooming, the network is decomposed into clusters, and one hub node in each cluster is responsible for grooming traffic from and to the cluster.
