The status of man and woman is a critical issue of debate between worldly religions and social as well as legal sciences around the globe. Generally, religious scholars highlight explicitly the roles of man and woman in terms of their rights and responsibilities prior to any discrimination. On the contrary, social and legal sciences claim equality of gender roles in all matters of life. At the same time, some religious scholars proclaim the superiority of man to woman and open the doors of a controversial discussion between religions and other sciences. This paper predominantly aims at exploring the concept of the superiority of man to woman and its limits within an Islamic realm. In order to provide a comprehensive review, this study highlights multifaceted aspects of the issue at hand, including the meaning of the superiority of man to man, the significance and objectives of the discussion, the Islamic standpoint towards the concept of the superiority, the roles of man and woman in a society, the limits of the superiority of man to woman, the moderate viewpoint about the concept, and finally the findings of the study as well as recommendations. This paper employs a qualitative content analysis methodology to address the issue from the Holy Qur’an, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and their interpretation books. This endeavor will provide an insight into the concept of the superiority of man to woman and its limits and will be beneficial for humanity in general and Muslims in particular to deal with the individual, family and social issues.
