Abstract

What is the optimal number of paddocks for rangelands that are managed with short duration grazing? In this paper, we study this hitherto unexamined question in range management. We first use queuing theory to provide a new stochastic description of a rangeland divided into paddocks that is managed with short duration grazing. Then, we use this description to demonstrate that the optimal number of paddocks is the solution to an expected profit maximization problem confronted by a rancher.
