Abstract

Westaim Surface Engineered Products Inc. (SEP), with assistance from Kellogg Brown & Root, Inc. (KBR) has developed a new generation of coated tubes and fittings with high resistance to coking, carburization, and hot erosion. SEP is commercializing the CoatAlloy™ product line for use in pyrolysis furnaces manufacturing olefins. Laboratory and pyrolysis pilot plant test results were presented at the 10th Ethylene Producers Conference held in New Orleans in March 1998 [1]. This current paper reports on key pilot plant results at low contact time cracking conditions and a commercial furnace evaluation of the CoatAlloy™ products undertaken by Union Texas Petrochemicals (UTP) in its Millisecond furnaces cracking ethane at Geismar, Louisiana. The evaluation was started during 4Q/1997 following a furnace retube project. One fully coated harp (four tubes and a fitting) using the CoatAlloy™ technology was installed. The pressure drops of two tubes in the fully coated harp and about half of the non-coated tubes in the furnace were monitored over time. Based on results of the first few months of operation, UTP committed to a full furnace trial starting in 1Q/1999. Results to date are very positive, with the CoatAlloy™ products exhibiting substantially reduced coking rates, consistent with pilot plant performance under similar cracking conditions. Key operating results will be presented, together with an update on the full furnace trial.
