Abstract
This draft of a first chapter of a textbook aims at introducing first year law school students in the basic elements of private law. It is a unique textbook in the sense that private law is not introduced along a national or regional system of law, but more in an abstract way. Use is made of newly developed Restatement of the Law clauses, that draw on the experiences in the North American and European Region. Reference is made to private law of specific countries. Hence, this textbook has a comparative character. Readers are expected to enroll in courses on specific topics of private law, like civil litigation, family law, company law, property law, as well as the classic law school course on contracts and torts (delicts). The hope is that this textbook has provided those students with an idea on the framework of private law.
