Abstract

Because the consequences of child-rearing are borne by every member of a community, the charge of parenting is flush with great social responsibility. Yet a generation of exalted individualism and careerism has seen shifts in family structures, childcare practices, and employer policies that suggest society has been failing to valuate properly its youngest members. This article reaffirms the importance of parenting as a moral and social mission and suggests policy changes to shore up child development and, above all, challenge the society’s cultural priorities.
