Abstract

'The Privacy Workstation - User Manual' is the most comprehensive user manual written for one of the disk-based versions of the 'DataLex Workstations' which we developed as a partly-commercial, partly-academic enterprise from 1991-95. The Workstations ran in both Windows and Mac versions. They were superseded by web-based versions from 1995.

The main point of the Workstations was that legal decision-support systems need to integrate hypertext and text retrieval into legal expert system ('AI and law'; applications before they were likely to be any use. The User Manual explains, from a user perspective, how these these three technologies are combined in order to provide more useful 'consultations' on legal questions.

For more context, a journal article 'The Privacy Workstation' is at http://ssrn.com/abstract=3000679.

Keywords: privacy, data protection, legal expert systems, AI and law, inferencing, hypertext
