Abstract

This affidavit by Dr. Richard Leo reviews police interrogation practices, coercive influence techniques, and false confessions in the context of the interrogation of Brendan Dassey. Dassey was just 17 years old when he was convicted of first-degree murder, mutilation of a corpse, and second-degree sexual assault, and sentenced to life in prison with possibility of parole in 2048 in Wisconsin state court. Dassey’s confession, which he subsequently recanted, contributed to his conviction. His trial and videotaped interrogation were featured in the 2015 Netflix documentary, Making a Murderer. Dassey’s conviction was overturned by a federal court in 2016.
