The essay considers the fate of Pell Grant funding for prisoners. In the 2016 Presidential Debates, criminal justice reform was repeatedly discussed, with both sides arguing for reform. However, what reform looks like under Donald Trump is anything but certain. As he touts himself as a "law and order" president, one might speculate what this means for restoring Pell Grants for prisoners. This is particularly the case since he has threatened to dismantle or seriously weaken the Department of Education, which administers Pell Grants. With these variables at play, determining where education reform sits is uncertain, and is destined to remain this way. As this issue has fallen heavily along partisan lights, the essay concludes that the next realistic opportunity for change would be after the 2018 Midterm Elections, assuming the elections bode well for Democrats.
