Abstract

This paper is an introduction to the re-publication of a 1895 report written by N.P. van den Berg, the president of the Java Bank in colonial Indonesia, for the government of British India. The report explains the system of monetary stabilisation and the change to a gold-exchange standard put in place in Indonesia in response to the depreciation of silver relative to gold during the 1870s-1890s. The introduction puts the report in the context of the economy of colonial Indonesia in the late-19th century, explains the basic operation of the gold-exchange standard in colonial Indonesia, and introduces the reader to the author of the report, his professional activities and his academic interests in monetary policy and economic history.
