Abstract

Although data protection and privacy overlaps they can be considered separately due to the differences in the scope, protection given to individuals and other important aspects and can be viewed as legal tools for counterbalancing the risks posed by the surveillance society. Accordingly, this paper will discuss the main concepts of privacy and data protection, their general aspects and overlaps, distinctions between privacy and data protection. This paper will discuss the added value of data protection in the context of counterbalancing the risks posed by the surveillance society and analyze the efficient tools for balancing power in a democratic society.
