Numerical Investigation of Single Phase Gas Flow Through Straight, Wavy and Branched Wavy Minichannels

In this paper, a parametric numerical study was undertaken to understand and analyze the refinement in the heat transfer performances of straight minichannels due to employing wavy design. Three dimensional conjugated heat transfer simulation was analyzed using finite-volume based CFD approach in ANSYS 16.0 to evaluate laminar convective heat transfer characteristics on a minichannel heat sink purely on the basis of geometrical modifications. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in the heat dissipation capacity of heat sinks in wavy minichannels than observed in straight minichannels. Another novel concept of secondary branches is introduced to intensify macroscopic mixing by disrupting and reinitializing boundary layer development periodically across the newly formed branches. This further enhanced the thermal performance of heat sinks.
