Effect of Wick Microstructures on Heat Pipe Performance – A Review

The geometry and topology of wick microstructures play a central role in heat pipe performance. It is therefore essential to analyze the wick microstructures. This is accomplished by a twofold approach encompassing wicking capability and thin film evaporation. In this unifying review, individual effects of conduction resistance, thin film percentage area, solid-liquid contact angle, and grooved geometry are collectively discussed. Detailed understanding of the wick characteristics will lead to design of heat pipes with efficient wick structure geometries.
