Performance Evaluation of Plate Heat Exchanger

Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) is the device in which plates are pressed together between two end covers. It consists of series of thin parallel plates that are corrugated both to increase turbulence and to increase mechanical rigidity. These heat exchanger plays significant role in condensing and evaporating system. The research work mainly deals with obtaining heat transfer data for two phase (steam to water) configuration in corrugated PHE. Calculations for heat transfer coefficient, heat duty, pressure drop is done analytically which is then validated with HTRI software. Heat duty calculated analytically was found to be 269.39kW, while from HTRI software 271.9kW. This study represents the influence of geometric parameters on thermal hydraulic performance of PHE. Numerical simulation is carried out with an objective to explore CFD tool to study flow pattern and heat transfer augmentation of furrows in corrugated walls encountered in commercial Plate Heat Exchanger.
