Abstract

In this foreword to Arcs of Global Justice: Essays in Honour of William A. Schabas (Oxford University Press 2018), co-editors Diane Marie Amann and Margaret M. deGuzman first recall the claim of Martin Luther King Jr. that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Then they summarize this collection’s 27 essays, in which 35 eminent scholar analyze developments in global justice since the end of World War II. Discussed are institutions like the United Nations, the European Court of Human Rights, and the International Criminal Court, and instruments like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention Against Torture, and the Canadian Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. The volume examines fits and starts in global justice regarding peace and war, international crimes, culture, capital punishment, environmental degradation, and not least, education and scholarship.
