Abstract

Political science includes both practical politics and theory. However, political scientists tend to communicate mainly within the professional field. They do not engage actively with the larger society. The consequences have been taken up in a task force report by a leading political science association and other sources. This essay suggests that the above tendencies are fostered by current incentives and constraints associated with university employment.
