Abstract

While Britain's Royal Navy is the subject of an old, massive and ever-growing body of historiography, works attempting to consider its post-1945 development in a comprehensive fashion are few in number. This is also significantly the case where even particular branches of it are concerned, even those so prominent as the capital ship forces with which overall naval power is so strongly identified. This paper's object is to provide a concise overview of the development of Britain's carrier force in the 1945-1979 period.
