The seemingly indispensable nature of social media has made it the most used means in communication in the world today. The aim of this paper is to critically look at the negative impact of social media on tertiary students’ academic performance in Ghana.
A sample of 1,000 university students used for the study to represent the entire population. Out of the 1,000, there were 900 respondents, 90% of the respondents. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaires which were administered to the students. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The study found out that students’ access to social media has a negative effect on their academic performance. The study recommends that the authorities in tertiary institutions in Ghana should enact strict rules and regulation to curtail the usage of social media during lectures and library sessions.
