Abstract

In 1973, the FAA banned civil supersonic flight over the United States. As a result, the supersonic aviation industry has not developed. It is now time to revisit the ban. Better technology¬ómaterials, engines, and simulation capabilities¬ómeans that it is now possible to produce a supersonic jet that is more economical and less noisy than those of the 1970s. In this paper, we examine the case for, the history of, and the legitimate issues created by supersonic flight. We conclude that it is past time to rescind the ban in favor of a modest and sensible noise standard.
