Abstract

Why is there such a wide political divide in this country? Why are liberals and conservatives unable to understand the positions of the otherside? “Why can’t we just get along?” A large part of the answer is cognitive biases – cognitive errors, which affect human decision-making and judgement.

This essay tries to answer these questions, using methods I developed in my book, Overcoming Cognitive Biases: Thinking More Clearly and Avoiding Manipulation by Others (2017). The essay explains cognitive biases, identifies the biases connected with the political divide, and offers solutions for overcoming the political divide.

Keywords: cognitive biases, cognitive psychology, politics, the law
