Abstract

What was known as Council of Europe data protection Convention 108 is now becoming the Global Data Protection Convention 108+, with the completion of the 'modernisation' of Convention 108. This presentation, given at the launch of the modernised Convention in Strasbourg, explores some of the differences between 108 and the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and suggests that the 'GDPR Lite' standards of 108 may become the new international data protection standard as the Convention 'globalises' with increasing numbers of parties from outside Europe.
