Abstract

Ready made garment industry is the largest export earning sector of Bangladesh. This industry started its journey since 1972 with a few garment companies which is now 5000 in number. More than 4.20 million workers are working in this industry of which 90 percent are rural women. In 2014-2015, this industry earned USD 25.49 billion through export which is 81% of the total export earnings of Bangladesh. As this industry became important in recent years, safety issues also became dominant to the foreign buyers due to frequent accidents and deaths of the workers. While the safety climate is studied mostly in different manufacturing industries in western countries, less is known about the ready-made garment industry of developing countries like Bangladesh. Hence, this study aims at identifying the safety climate of RMG industry and its precaution measures in Begladesh- A data of 301 workers and 35 managers of 23 companies were collected through a structured questionnaire. For identifying the factors concerning the safety climate, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed. Structural Equation Modeling (SEIO) has been used to identify the relationships between the safety climate factors and the overall safety measures of this industry. The results show that there are a number of safety factors concerned with the safety climate of RMG industry in Bangladesh such as, safety policy, safety motivation, emergency preparedness, safety training, safety communication, management commitment to safety, and safety priority. This study also found that there is a significant relationship between the overall safety environment of RMG industry with the safety motivation, safety training, safety communication, management commitment to safety, and safety priority of the RMG companies of Bangladesh. It is recommended that the policymakers of this industry should make appropriate policy for the improvement of safety climate that will revive the good image of RMG industry of Bangladesh to the foreign buyers.
