Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a distinct, significant and fascinating time of life where profound and rapid changes occur with potential for huge impact on both current and future well being.

Methods: The objective of the study was to explore the factors influencing the general wellbeing of adolescents with health problems in Government schools, Chennai, India. Qualitative research approach with phenomenological exploratory research design was used. Purposive sampling technique was adopted to select 20 adolescents with health problems in Government Schools. Structured questionnaire was used to assess the demographic variables and semi structured open ended questions were used to collect the data. The data was collected using audio taped interview and transcribed into verbatim. The data was analyzed using Collaizza's methodological interpretation approach.

Findings, Interpretation and Funding: The findings were presented in main themes such as physical wellbeing, emotional wellbeing, intellectual wellbeing, environmental wellbeing and social wellbeing. Adolescence is a critical stage of life and need support to attain a productive, healthy, and satisfying life. This is a self funded study.

Ethical clearance for the study was obtained from institutional ethical committee. Informed consent was obtained from the students and parents. The study was conducted after seeking permission from the concerned school authority.
