Abstract

The political atmosphere in the Tamil province of Madras Presidency was totally changed after the partition of Bengal in July 1905. Protest meetings, student demonstrations, and boycott were held all over Tamil province. The anti-partition movement occupied the front pages of nationalist press. The wave of anti-British agitations prepared the ground for the vigorous Swadeshi Movement, which was launched soon after the annual session of the Congress in December 1905. At this juncture, new leaders were emerged and urged the people to join the Swadeshi Movement. The leaders like S.N.Thirumalachari, M.P.Thirumalachari, C.Subramania Bharathi, S.Srinivaschari, G.Subramaniya lyer, V.O.Chidambaram Pillai, V.Chakkarai Chetti and Ethiraj Surendranath Arya became the torch bearers of extremist movement in the Madras Presidency.

In the present paper, an attempt is made to bring to lime light a source material entitled How to bring about the national unity of the Indians?; which was written by C.Subramania Bharathi, so far unexplored in the historiography of Indian National Movement. Bharathi, a swadeshi nationalist and a poet – patriot, who inculcated the gospels of Swadeshi nationalism in the minds of Indians during the course of Swadeshi movement. Bharathi waged a relentless war against the alien rule throughout his life time through his writings.
