We examine motives in unique positive integer games in a laboratory setting. In lowest (highest) unique positive integer games, the participant with the lowest (highest) integer choice that is unique wins. In addition to the payoff maximization motive, we identify and characterize psychological motives, including winning probability maximization and social welfare maximization. We study games where different action profiles correspond to different motives and games where they do not. This permits us to empirically estimate individual heterogeneity corresponding to these behavioral types and arrive at characterizations of behavior in unique integer games.
