Abstract

Global managers encounter the daunting task of balancing the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental protection, the organization’s economic viability, and social justice (equity). Both scholars and practitioners have increasingly shown interest in this integrative management system. However, the literature on organizational sustainability is fragmented and inconsistent. Furthermore, current conceptual models of how to realize organizational sustainability in the global business environment are either too vague or too incomplete to offer clear guidance to the practicing sustainability manager. This paper uses a systematic review methodology to offer the first collective body of evidence on the global business environment’s impact on sustainable organizations. An analysis of 19 peer-reviewed research articles on organizational sustainability in the global environment covering the period from 2000 to 2016 offers a new conceptual model of sustainable organizations in the global environment, suggestions for future research, and guidelines for professional global sustainability managers.
