Abstract

In the present study, twenty samples of soils were taken from many regions from Baghdad governorate. These samples were collected from many places within various dates. These samples were stored for one month under normal laboratory conditions. This time is necessary to get a radiological equilibrating to the samples, before counting the activity of natural radioactive material for the samples. There are six radionuclides were appeared in Baghdad soils samples: (Bi-214, Ra-226, TI-208, Bi-212, Pb-212, K-40), these radionuclides included; two radionuclides (Bi-214, Ra-226) belong to the U-238 series, three radionuclides (TI-208, Bi-212, Pb-212) belong to Th-232series and one is the natural radionuclide (K-40), the lowest average specific activities of the radionuclides in all samples using NaI(Tl) detector was (Tl-208) and equal to (0.735Bq/kg) but the highest specific activities of the radionuclides in all samples was (K-40) and equal to (21.276 Bq/kg). The external dose of the nature radioactivity for all Baghdad soils was (0.325 mSv.y-1) is quite low compared with the allowed limit (1 mSv.y-1) UNSCEAR.
