Abstract

The poet asks whether the grammar of a language may reveal potencies and weaknesses in allowing the Self to appear. The appearance of the subject in English poetry, where the grammar identifies the person by number and point of view (I, you, and he/she/it), is contrasted with Persian poems. More than formal linguistic issues may be at stake.

Keywords: Persian poetry, individualism in poetry
