Exploration of a Design Battle Using Latent Semantic Analysis

In this paper, we use Latent Semantic Analysis to explore the design battles in smartphones. Using newspaper coverage from 1992-2012, we build a semantic model of the media coverage to identify article clusters. Cluster membership gives us visibility into trends in coverage over the course of the study. We find that five distinct periods can be identified. Some unique characteristics of this market lead us to develop new propositions about design battles.
