Abstract

Food security and right to food have become an important issue of discourse in the world climes, especially due to its sustenance or promotion of many other recognised human rights. The contribution of global food system to sustainable development cannot be overemphasized as it plays a centre role. The trend in the prices of commodities including food items in the past few decades shows that the prices are slowly hiking; moreover, food prices have begun to escalate beyond the reach of the poor masses in the face of the recent economic recession in Nigeria. Many other factors are militating against availability of nutritious foods for the Nigerian citizens. It is therefore the specific aim of this research work to put into context the right of people to food and the need for the government to be proactive in its responsibility to eradicate poverty in the soonest possible time and ensure the right to adequate and nutritious food is projected as a cardinal measure in achieving the much touted sustainable development goals.
