Abstract

Curious about citation patterns of law journals, I undertook a series of modest studies to discuss in the "Practicing Reference" column of Law Library Journal. This installment looks at a sample of the first five articles in each of 23 flagship law reviews published in 1992.

I found that, in the aggregate, articles are cited most in their early years, but some are still cited even 35 years after publication. Indeed, a few are cited for the first time decades after publication. Individually, articles vary widely. In this sample, one was cited 724 times, but the median article had only 7 citations, and 9 articles were cited only once or twice.

Keywords: law reviews, law journals, legal periodicals, librarianship, citation studies, bibliometrics
