Abstract

Reza Vali, a Persian composer of Contemporary Iranian Art Music, has composed numerous works for Western instruments that derive influence from Iranian music. This article examines the use of the Persian dastgāh and maqām in Reza Vali’s composition, Kismet (Calligraphy No.7), for Western-concert flute trio. Suggestions for performance practice are provided in conjunction with a musical analysis to facilitate culturally-informed performances of this and other similar intercultural compositions.
