Abstract

Epigenomic studies involve the complete set of silencing or activating genetic material in a cell. This complete modification map on a person’s genetic material is considered the epigenome. Since the advent of high throughput sequencing at a low cost, whole genome studies are now feasible. This high throughput sequencing is enhanced via bioinformatic technologies to help manage the big data mining requirements to understand the genomic and epigenetic maps. Through the study of epigenetics, we are now beginning to understand disease progression that may not be due to genetic variants. For example, the underlying genetic material might be normal but if certain environmental cues exist then the methylation of tumor suppression genes might become inactive — leading to the development of certain types of cancers. The purpose of this essay was to investigate how does the link between epigenetics, genomics and the environment influence healthcare, legal and ethical discussions.
