German Abstract: Die Beschäftigung mit außerirdischer Intelligenz ist ein paradoxes Unterfangen, da sie notwendigerweise mit menschlichen Annahmen über das außerirdische Gegenüber arbeiten muss. Die soziologische Systemtheorie stellt ein Begriffsinstrumentarium bereit, welches derartige Annahmen zwar nicht vollständig vermeiden aber so weit wie möglich minimieren kann. Mit dem Begriff der doppelten Kontingenz verfügt die Systemtheorie über eine theoretische Figur, die die Begegnung des Menschen mit außerirdischer Intelligenz auf einer formal-abstrakten Ebene beschreibt und erklärt, wie dabei auf einer emergenten Ordnungsebene Kommunikation entsteht. Die Kommunikation komplexer Inhalte setzt demnach einen langen soziokulturellen Evolutionsprozess voraus und muss bei einem Erstkontakt als unwahrscheinlich gelten. Vielmehr stellt sich die Frage, wie Kommunikation mit fremden Entitäten überhaupt verdauerhaftet werden kann. Die Unwahrscheinlichkeit von kommunikativem Erfolg wird als mögliche Erklärung des Fermi-Paradoxons zur Diskussion gestellt.

English Abstract: Thinking about extraterrestrial intelligence is a paradoxical endeavour because it involves, of necessity, working with human assumptions about our extraterrestrial counterparts. Sociological systems theory provides a set of conceptual tools that enable such assumptions to be minimized to the greatest possible extent, even if they cannot be completely avoided. In particular, the concept of double contingency in systems theory is a theoretical figure which describes the human encounter with extraterrestrial intelligence at a formal, abstract level and explains how communication arises at an emergent level of order. On this basis, the communication of complex information requires a long socio-cultural process of evolution and must be considered unlikely upon first contact. The question that arises, then, is how communication with alien entities can be placed on a continuous, ongoing basis at all. The improbability of communicative success is offered for debate as a possible explanation for Fermi’s paradox.
