This literature review focuses on temperature variation and its effect in hydrodynamic journal bearing. It is seen that, the temperature varies with respect to bearing speed, load acting on bearing, eccentricity ratio, radial clearance, frictional force, type of bearing, lubricant flow rate and change in viscosity of lubricant. The performance characteristics of journal bearing depends on the viscosity of the lubricant and viscosity is a function of temperature. Heat is generated due to viscous friction in the lubricating film and temperature of the lubricant rises. The temperature variation experienced by the lubricant is thus one of the important parameter. In the optimum design of journal bearings, it is important that to maintain minimum overall temperature. It is seen that thermal effects are more pronounced at higher value of bearing speed, and load acting on bearing.
