Abstract

The swell of public interest in cryptocurrencies over the past few years has also brought with it an increase in the amount of scams and fraudulent practices against the public in the guise of cryptocurrency-themed ruses. This discussion paper considers the delegitimizing effect on the cryptocurrency space arising from the increase in fraudulent activity, and uses data gathered by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) of the United Kingdom to raise concerns about the growth in such malpractice for the future of cryptocurrency.
