Abstract

Bandy was no stranger to entrepreneurship and the problems brought about by success. Having honed his programming skills in the 1980s, he had already founded a database company that had seen great success—and then had been squeezed out by investors. He spent a few years after that working for a computing firm in Richmond until a chance remark by his young son spurred him to become an entrepreneur again. In 2005, he founded BandyWorks, a computing services consulting firm.

Bandyworks (B): Tom Bandy—Growing, Letting Go

Tom Bandy, founder and CEO of the Virginia software firm BandyWorks, closed his Skype window and lowered his head to his desk. He tapped his forehead twice on the mouse pad. As he did so, he said to himself, “That was a head-banger of a meeting.”

One of his office windows faced south in the 160-year-old farmhouse he had purchased in 2008 to house his business efforts. It was 8:00 a.m. in Petersburg, Virginia, and the sun was streaming in. Staff members were beginning to arrive. He could smell the coffee someone had started brewing downstairs.

Bandy did not feel the refreshed sense of a new dawn; he was tired. He already had been on a video conference for an hour with Balavikram Balavenkataraman (Vikram), his head of product development in Bangalore, India. There was a big problem that needed a solution yesterday. Instead, Bandy was being told to wait.

“Success should not be this hard,” he thought.
